Shelf Life: Gracie Mansion

Shelf Life is a rotating, micro-exhibition series that presents an intimate glimpse into the lives of influential people by presenting a curated cross section of their most coveted objects and treasured possessions. Set within the context of The Gift Shop—which features an array of books, objects and apparel commissioned exclusively from a variety of emerging and established artists—Shelf Life blends the personal and the commercial, suggesting new relationships between objects and their owners.

The first in the series features the collection of veteran gallery owner and adviser Gracie Mansion, founder of the Gracie Mansion Gallery and seminal figure in the 1980’s East Village art scene. During that era, she was instrumental in the development of several artists’ careers, such as Marilyn Minter, Fluxus artist Al Hansen, David Wojnarowicz and Buster Cleveland. Available for purchase at The Gift Shop throughout the duration of this exhibition are replicas of the jumpsuits worn by Mike Howard and Buster Cleveland in the 1985 issue of People Magazine’s “25 Most Intriguing People of the Year.”
